Budva Old Town and its surroundings are literally filled with unique sights: there are 10 gates leading into the town, among which you'll find the Eastern Gate, opening directly into the open sea. These gates hold special secrets.
It was originally built in the 7th century. It is here that you can see the most precious icon of the people of Budva, their protector - Our Lady of Budva.
Erected soon after Christianity was declared an official religion. The outline of the ancient structure, the altarpiece and the delightful floor mosaics are well preserved.
You will see a Balkan iconostasis with dragons, colourful frescoes and hear a story about how the locals celebrate the Orthodox holidays.
When Budva was part of the ancient Roman province of Prevalis, the town's inhabitants generously poured wine on these stones as an offering to their gods.
The remains of Villa Rustica were discovered after a devastating earthquake in Budva. At that time, on 15 April 1979, only 8 houses remained intact in the city, while the rest were partially or completely destroyed. However, there was also the benefit of this catastrophe - the remains of ancient structures, previously hidden from people, were brought to the surface.
The fortress was founded in the 9th century, later rebuilt by the Venetians and then the Austro-Hungarians. Inside the fortress there are positions and towers with magnificent views of St Nicholas Island, the longest island in Montenegro; a maritime museum and library with a rich collection of books on the history of the Balkans; a stone tablet depicting two crossed fish, a symbol of the devoted love of Marko and Elena (if you rub the tablet, love will be as strong as stone!). Climb the fortress wall, which offers a stunning view of the surrounding countryside. Entrance fee to the citadel is an additional €3.5 per person.
