Elandin rapids:The natural wonder of Gorno-Altaisk
The Yelandinsky rapids in Gorno-Altaisk are a natural miracle, the personification of the power of nature and the beauty of the Altai Territory. Located a kilometer above the village of Elanda in the Chemal district, these rapids are an amazing natural phenomenon that has been forming for thousands of years.
The river in this place creates narrow canyons framed by sheer rock walls. This is a tectonic crack that arose 550-500 million years ago, during the Cambrian period. The left canyon stretches for 40 meters and is blocked by a limestone block, while the right one has a length of 100 meters.
The landscape in this area is impressive for its severity – bare rocks surround a narrow gorge, creating an atmosphere of incredible wildness. The water forms large waves and barrels, creating ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts such as catamarans and rafts.
For water tourists swimming from the Kuyusa side, the power line crossing the river in front of the threshold and the tunnel on the right bank serve as landmarks. This region offers an unforgettable experience for both adrenaline lovers and those who prefer to enjoy the beauty of nature by watching catamarans and rafts crossing the rapids.
