Welcome to the ancient and beautiful Kivach Nature Reserve in Petrozavodsk, one of the oldest nature reserves in Russia, which was established on June 11, 1931 by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Here, in the Kondopoga district of the Republic of Karelia, the nature of the Russian north reveals itself in its unique beauty and diversity.
The reserve covers an area of an impressive 10,930 hectares, and a conservation area with a total area of 6,213 hectares has been created around it. This small natural corner is dominated by forest landscapes with spruce and pine forests, as well as hills where you can find trees that are up to three and a half centuries old.
The main natural gem of the reserve is the Kivach waterfall, which serves as the central object of protection. Sopokhsky Forest is also nearby, where ancient trees have been preserved, the breath of time has slowed their growth.
The Kivach Nature Reserve is not only a place of amazing nature, but also a habitat for various forms of life. There are 216 species of birds, 47 species of mammals, and 3 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians found in the fauna. Freshwater reservoirs in the reserve are inhabited by 18 species of fish.
It is also a wonderful place for tourists and nature lovers. Organized groups of tourists can enjoy the beauty of Kivach Waterfall and other natural routes. During the year, the reserve receives more than one hundred thousand visitors who can see nature in its pristine splendor.
Entrance to the territory of the reserve and inspection of the Kivach waterfall are available by ticket. The reserve is also actively engaged in scientific research, studying the impact of anthropogenic impact, including tourism, on natural complexes and developing measures for their conservation.
