The Jozani forest is known not only for its monkeys, but also for many other interesting sights... First of all, it is a huge nature reserve, strictly protected and named Jozani Chwaka Bay. It is located in the central part of Zanzibar. I invite you to see amazing views of the local flora and fauna with me!
You will be picked up from the hotel and taken to The Forest.
Jozani also has a second name – Red Monkey Forest, because it is here that red colobuses, a very rare species of monkeys, live. Unlike their counterparts, colobus are not aggressive and quite friendly, and do not mind taking a couple of photos with you. Unfortunately, their number is approximately 2-3 thousands, which is why the colobus fell into the status of endangered.
In addition to these amazing monkeys, this forest is home toSuni pygmy antelopes, monitor lizards, chameleons, more than fifty species of butterflies, secretive Zanzibar leopards, as well as blue monkeys. The fauna of the island is also rich in many species of tropical birds.
The local flora is also amazing – there are clove trees, grapes, numerous ferns, rattan and raffia palms, red mahogany trees, known for their acoustic properties, from which musical instruments are made, and also huge ficuses.
The part of the reserve that runs along the border with the sea bay is known for its mangroves. For the convenience of tourists, special wooden bridges, which fit perfectly into the local landscape, were built there.
