Embark on an extraordinary adventure as we set off from Mekele towards Hamed Ela, passing through Berhale. Here, the Danakil Depression begins, revealing its captivating yet unforgiving nature.
Prepare to be mesmerized by the striking colors of the sulfur springs and the awe-inspiring landscapes. As we traverse the desert, we encounter camel caravans, a vital part of the salt mining industry. Witness the comings and goings of these majestic creatures, laden with precious salt from the Danakil.
After a 3-4 hour drive, we reach Hamed Ela, a quaint village of approximately 500 residents. As the sun sets, we find ourselves at Dallol, a place of otherworldly beauty.

Day 2:
In the morning, we embark on a captivating journey, the bustling hub of salt mining. Observe the locals engaged in the arduous task of extracting salt from the ground, shaping it into rectangular pieces, and loading them onto the backs of camels.
Continuing our expedition, we arrive to Dallol Volcano, where a surreal landscape awaits us, shaped by volcanic activity. At Dallol, situated 116 meters below sea level, we witness the vibrant hues of salt mining and explore the remarkable Lake Asale. Immerse yourself in the captivating presence of camel caravans and embrace the opportunity to walk alongside the Afar people, gaining insights into their way of life.
Afterward, we drive back to Hamed Ela and proceed to Mekele, cherishing the memories of our unforgettable Danakil journey.
