Today, our journey begins with a drive to Barehala camp. Once there, you will take a 2-hour rest.
Once all the logistics are in place, we will continue our drive towards Ahmed Ela, a great base for exploring the salt mines, witnessing the salt workers, and marveling at the camel caravans. We will set up our overnight at Ahamd Ela camp.
Day 2:
During our second day, we will have the opportunity to visit the salt workers and merchants residing near Lake Asale. This will be an enlightening experience as we will observe and learn about the locals' techniques for cutting, shaping.
As we continue our journey towards Dallol Volcano, we will be treated to stunning views of small hills and vibrant hot springs scattered throughout the area. These hot springs display a dazzling array of colors, thanks to the diverse minerals, sulfurs, and potash present in them. Dallol holds the distinction of being one of the hottest inhabited places on earth, with an average annual temperature recorded between 1960 and 1966.
We will overnight at a local camp.
Day 3:
Our morning will be dedicated to heading towards Dodom camp, before continuing along the paved road and venturing into the sandy terrain that leads to the magnificent Erta Ale Volcano.
Once we have loaded up the camels, we will embark on a trek towards the volcano's rim, timed to coincide with the sunset to avoid walking during the scorching heat of the day. The trek itself will last approximately 4 to 5 hours, with the latter part taking place in darkness.
Along the gently ascending hike, we will encounter captivating lava formations. While the path is not excessively steep, it is crucial for everyone to have a torch and stick together for safety. Our camping spot will be on the crater rim, at a safe distance from the lava, allowing us to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of Erta Ale, an active volcano.
We will overnight at a local camp.
Day 4:
As we bid farewell to our campsite in the morning, we will descend to the mountain's base and then embark on an off-road drive through the desert landscape.
By late afternoon, we will arrive at a small settlement where the salt caravans gather before their arduous journey to Mekele. Here, we will have the opportunity to witness the constant ebb and flow of the camel caravans. The caravans arriving empty are met by those departing, fully laden with valuable salt blocks.
We will overnight at a local camp.
Day 5:
Our morning will begin with the mesmerising sight of thousands of camels forming a long line as they set off towards the salt-cutting area.
Subsequently, we will drive towards Mekele, making a stop at a small and clear waterfall for lunch, allowing us to refresh ourselves and cleanse the cars of salt residue.
By late afternoo we will reach the town of Mekele, concluding our tour.
